As a long-distance four-season solo backpacker this reminds me of why I always leave a detailed trip plan with a reliable person.

The article fails to mention if the backpacker was following a cross country route, or was on trail. But, it's good that he was on his way out on his own when he was located.

The junction of Piute Creek with the JMT is marked by a picturesque bridge.Lunch in the fine shade, on the cool boulder, under the Piute Creek Bridge

The North side of the bridge is anchored on a large boulder. I always have a nice break and a dip from my custom Troll lunch spot under the North side of the bridge when I pass through there. The Swimming Hole is splendid, but the water has always been absolutely freezing:
